MozParks, a leader in Sustainable Economic Zones, celebrated the opening of its new office in Triunfo, Maputo. The event marks a continuation of the company’s long-standing commitment to advancing eco-friendly industrial growth in Mozambique. Since its opening in 1999, Beluluane Industrial Park (BIP) has attracted $2.5 billion in investment and generated over 10,000 jobs.

Distinguished guests, including government officials and partners, attended the inauguration, which featured a tour of the new office and an overview of MozParks’ history and upcoming plans. 

 

MozParks’ Legacy  

As Mozambique’s sole operator of Sustainable Economic Zones, MozParks has leveraged the eco-industrial model to promote collective spaces where tenants share resources to increase profitability, local production, and environmental care. The company offers a business-friendly climate with administrative support for licensing and compliance, quality infrastructure, 80 MW of power, and tax incentives, making Mozambique accessible for investment. 

MozParks has an agreement with the government of Mozambique to build 20 parks across the country, mobilising employment and entrepreneurship. 

“MozParks’ Sustainable Economic Zones are the bridge that connects big anchor industries such as Mozal and Kenmare with small and medium enterprises, donors, government, NGOs, and communities, promoting collaboration and synergy,” said Adrian Frey, Chairman of MozParks. “Together with these anchor industries, our goal is to create income for one million people in Mozambique.”

The company envisions extending the eco-industrial park model across other African countries to stimulate investment, establish stable business environments, and positively impact local communities and economies. 

Claire Zimba, a MozParks Board Member representing the Minister of Industry and Commerce, emphasised his support for MozParks’ vision: “Beluluane Industrial Park’s success highlights the importance of public-private partnerships and their impact on a country’s socio-economic development.” 

Growth and Impact  

Evolving from Beluluane Industrial Park to MozParks in 2021, the company has drawn key companies like Mozal, Africa’s second-largest aluminium smelter. Today, the park houses over 50 companies from 17 countries, including players like Capital Star Steel, Midal Cables International, Sunshine Nut Co., and up-and-coming industries like Raxio, Mozambique’s first high-standard data centre. BIP represents almost 30% of the industrial workforce in Maputo Province and 5% of all employment nationally.

“We want to replicate this model in your countries,” said Onorio Manuel, MozParks’ General Director, speaking to representatives from Rwanda, Kenya, and Eswatini who attended the inauguration. “We want to replicate BIP across Africa.” 

Building on this legacy, the MozYouth Foundation, known initially as Beluluane JOBA and MIMI NIKO KAZI, was born out of BIP in 2018 and offers internships to nurture young Mozambican talent and promote job readiness. Since then, the MozYouth Foundation has hosted over 1,000 interns—almost half women—supporting MozParks’ subsequent aim to drive youth empowerment. 

 

A Vision for the Future 

In 2022, MozParks expanded its vision by establishing Topuito Industrial Park (TIP) in Nampula, adjacent to Kenmare’s heavy sand mine, demonstrating a blueprint to reproduce BIP’s influence country-wide.

Looking ahead, MozParks plans to initiate developments in Cabo Delgado province. These parks will integrate within small communities and directly involve residents, creating employment and training opportunities and promoting community engagement. 

“Contributing to peace is the best way to overcome challenges in our province,” said Nocif Magaia, Cabo Delgado’s Provincial Director of Industry and Commerce. “These parks are engines for stability, progress, and development.” 

The EDM Beluluane Power Project with Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM), funded by the German Financial Cooperation through KfW, is another example of MozParks’ sustainable development efforts. The Power Project harnesses 80 MW of hydroelectric energy from the Cahora Bassa dam, reducing 16,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually. This advancement in clean power will allow BIP to host over 100 companies and create over 20,000 jobs in the next 10 years. 

 

New Office Milestone 

The new Maputo office is a testament to MozParks’ principles, blending forward thought with eco-consciousness. Built with sustainable materials and designed to save energy, it maximises natural light and airflow, reducing power consumption. Insulation from recycled content helps to maintain a comfortable work setting, while rainwater collection and water-saving fixtures reflect the company’s dedication to preserving natural resources.
