Powering Progress MozParks Inaugurates New Hydroelectric Power Station in Beluluane Industrial Park

[Maputo, Mozambique, May 10] – Mozambique celebrates a significant stride toward sustainable development with the inauguration of the EDM Beluluane Power Project that took place today, May 10 at the Beluluane Industrial Park.

MozParks, in partnership with the national power company Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) and financed by the German Financial Cooperation through KfW, launched a 20.8 million euro hydroelectric power station. With 80 MW from the Cahora Bassa dam, the project underscores Mozambique’s move toward clean energy growth, positioning Maputo Province as a regional energy hub. This strategic development is poised to attract companies looking to set up or relocate to Mozambique, offering a reliable power source within Beluluane Industrial Park (BIP).

The inauguration ceremony was attended by President Nyusi, German Ambassador Ronald Muench, as well as representatives of MozParks and EDM.

In his speech, the President emphasized the importance of energy for development, highlighting that many companies are located in the park because of the availability of good quality and affordable energy, as demonstrated by the inauguration of the Beluluane Power project, which will benefit several areas including Beluluane, Mussumbuluco, and Mavoko.

Vision for Growth and Sustainability

Being Mozambique’s sole operator of Sustainable Economic Zones, or eco-industrial parks, MozParks manages BIP in Maputo Province’s Boane district. Since 2019, the EDM Beluluane Power Project has focused on upgrading the existing substation and establishing a new backup in Mahoche, ensuring the park’s connection to the national grid. This upgrade fosters investment, job creation, and sustainable growth. BIP will double in size over the next ten years as a result of the Power Project, with plans to host over 100 companies and create 20,000 employment opportunities, improving livelihoods for the surrounding communities.

Gender parity remains a core tenet of the mission, highlighted by park companies like Darling—part of the Godrej Group—where 75% of its 3,000 employees are women. The MozYouth Foundation, started by MozParks, First National Bank (FNB), Hollards Group, Syrah Resources (TWIGG Exploration & Mining) and DP World, offers internships across Mozambique, including in BIP, hosting nearly 50% women participants. With over half of Mozambique’s population under 18, MozParks understands that creating jobs is crucial for the country’s future.

Green Energy

The continuous usage of hydroelectric power in the BIP means less use of fossil fuels and a significant cut in CO2 emissions. In addition to powering industries, the project brings electricity to 3,000 homes nearby, advancing Mozambique’s socio-economic and environmental aims.

Enhancing Tenant Capabilities at Beluluane

For BIP’s existing tenants, the new power station will boost production and improve operations, helping businesses grow in a sustainable and environmentally responsible way, all while contributing to the economy.

BIP is a vibrant industrial hub, with major companies like Mozal, Africa’s second-largest aluminium smelter; MGC, a top natural gas supplier; and up-and-coming industries, like Raxio, Mozambique’s first high-standard data centre. These sectors are crucial to the industrial workforce and GDP in Maputo Province.

A Call to Action for Regional Collaboration

MozParks invites businesses, particularly from South Africa, to consider BIP as their new industrial base. The park has already attracted over $2.5 billion in investments, drawing on its competitive tax benefits and well-developed industrial infrastructure.

At BIP, companies gain access to a host of advantages, including: streamlined investor services, ready-to-use industrial land complete with road access and security, 80 KW of reliable power, a dedicated water supply, warehouse rental options, and support for environmental compliance. The park advocates a circular business model, emphasizing resource sharing to streamline logistics and reduce costs and excess inventory. Moreover, it commits to community engagement and developing training programs to equip local workers with necessary skills.

Choosing BIP means joining a well-established, resource-rich environment strategically designed to enhance business success and operational efficiency.
